Google Wave was introduced recently at the Google I/O conference. Wave is the brainchild of two brothers, Lars and Jens Rasmussen, that previously brought us what we know today as Google Maps.
Wave is an ambitious new communication platform. It seeks to replace many of the web functions we use everyday; email, instant messaging, blogs, wiki’s, and more. I am so impressed, I think it might actually succeed. As techcrunch explains in their thorough review:
“Everyone uses email and instant messaging on the web now, but imagine if you could tie those two forms of communication together and add a load of functionality on top of it. At its most fundamental form, that’s essentially what Wave is.”
Lars Rasmussen explains in his presentation:
“Wave is what email would look like if it were invented today.”
Wave seeks to be an open-source platform which in a nutshell means Google isn’t going to “own” the usage of Wave. Other people will be able to build programs to use it much the same way no one company “owns” email or instant messaging today.
