Every law firm search engine marketing consultant knows the value of monitoring both their client’s search engine position and those of their competitors. If you are currently handling your firm’s own search engine optimization, you need to have the right tools to properly monitor your progress. However, there are many rank tracking tools that don’t provide you with a complete picture of your progress.

Also, search analysis can be a tedious process. Organizing multiple data sets from several different sources, can become extremely time-consuming. We are experimented with several web-based, browser-based, and desktop solutions. Recently, we have been checking out Caphyon’s search engine ranking software, Advanced Web Ranking and link popularity Advanced Link Manager tools.

Advanced Web Ranking (AWR)

As you probably know, using a Keyword Research Tool will help you determine relevance, search volume and competition, for finding your niche market related keywords. One of the features we really enjoyed from Advanced Web Ranking was their ability to combine multiple keywords tools one place to make the keyword discovery process more efficient and effective.

We also appreciated AWR’s search engine-conscious features. The software is “smart” when it comes to issues typically related to automated querying of search engines. It imitates a user’s manual search behavior by querying page by page and pausing between two consecutive pages. For each engine, it will only do a single query at a time.

Another strong feature is AWR’s Rank Evolution graphical charts. These charts allow you to make essential customizations. You can chart progress over time and dig deep into your key performance indicators. The software makes long-term rank analysis much more efficient.

We’ve looked at several different options for full-service tools. While there are many other tools out there that we still use, for its function, we weren’t able to find any website ranking tools that we liked more than AWR. And we’re not alone. User’s at SEOmoz, and Search Engine Land have also found it effective.

Here are some other top features:

Here are some additional key features of AWR:

* Triggers can be set to automatically alert you to certain events that occur (e.g. a decrease in ranking on certain money keywords)
* It runs on Mac, Windows and Linux
* Advanced filtering can be set to get you information that is most relevant for your needs
* You can monitor keywords on a local basis limited to results for a certain city or region
* AWR can help you generate a list of keywords
* You can export the data to manipulate in external programs such as Excel

The feature list depends on which AWR license you purchase. There are four levels of license increasing in features from standard to server. Even the standard license comes with some of the most important tools. However, we’ve been working with enterprise. Our choice to use enterprise was primarily based on the trigger, project management, and keyword research features that are not available at the lower licenses.

The feature of AWR that caused us to choose it over a couple of our other considerations, was the support. AWR has an extensive user guide, knowledge base, and customer support. The software is also constantly updated. The AWR Blog is also a great resource for keeping up issues relevant to ranking. Caphyon also provides extened maintenance plans which cover access to any relevant support and software updates for your software license on 12 month cycles. The maintenance plan provides product updates, search engine updates, and technical support.

Advanced Link Manager (ALM)

Link analysis, measurement, and monitoring is really at the core of any law firm seo campaign. Links are the currency of the internet and figuring out how to garner more links to your site has to be on your very short list of priorities. However, it is also important to keep in mind that organizing and managing those links is an ongoing art. This is where Advanced Link Manager comes into play. Advanced Link Manager leverages the search engines to seek out potential link partners. It also searches potential partner sites to see which are linking to you.

alm windows Excellent Software Assistance For Your Search Marketing Analysis

With an enterprise license of ALM, you also get one of the newest features of the software. The analyze domain quality feature allows you to view the quality of one or multiple domains. This helps you determine which domains are worth getting links from and which are not. Information such as the number and quality of inbound links is critical to growing your site’s search engine visibility.

One of the most common drawbacks of most link manager solutions is exporting and organizing data. ALM can export all the data it gathers to a CSV or XML file. The feature allows you to create custom export templates and export the data at anytime. You can also schedule recurring updates and reports. This allows for data export at certain dates and times.

Triggers allows you to define an action template which will execute an action on the referrer URL that match the selected filters. For example, you want to remove wrong referrers from your project. A trigger can be used on the Filter section to remove these from your results.

If some of these features seem a little confusing, check out this walkthrough. It gives you an excellent break down of what types of tasks can be implemented using ALM. Who knows, the walkthrough may even give you some ideas for link analysis and management that you had not though of yet.

Out of the ten paid web ranking and link management tools that we reviewed, there is no question that AWR and ALM come out on top for efficiency and effectiveness. While I stand behind the opinions that I have expressed here, it doesn’t hurt that Caphyon offers a substantial license discount for articles reviewing the software, of which I plan to take full advantage.

Google Fiberizing The Web

Imagine sitting in a rural courtroom, streaming real-time three-dimensional imaging of an accident scene to a jury. Or collaborating with a multi-jurisdictional trial team around the world while watching live 3-D video of a mock trial, opening statement, or cross-examination.

Yesterday, Google discussed its plan to develop ultra high-speed broadband networks. Their goal is to deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most people have access to today.

How will they do it: Fiber-to-the-home connections:

This video was embedded using the YouTuber plugin by Roy Tanck. Adobe Flash Player is required to view the video.

While the availability of such technology to the masses is likely far into the future, the prospect of such capabilities sparks the imagination.

Craigslist For Your Law Firm?

Published on 04 February 2010 by AttorneySync in Blog, Lawyer Marketing, News

Recently, more and more lawyers have been telling us that they have been seeing great results with their craigslist advertising. While craigslist posts are free, are they worth the effort in setting up a full craigslist ad campaign?

As it turns out, for a lot of law firms, posting on craigslist is well-worth the time.

As with any other advertising, it is important that your craigslist ads comply with your state’s rules on attorney advertisements. At the risk of stating the obvious, don’t post listings for adult secretarial services.

Are you using craigslist for your law firm? We’d love to know what kind of results you have been getting.

From time to time, we come across a law firm website that we really like. The new website of San Jose Employment Lawyers Mesirow & Fink is definitely one of those sites (disclaimer, we did not design the site):

employmentlawyersanjosehome A Good Looking Law Firm Website

The site is very clean looking with easy to use global and local navigation. There are multiple calls to action that are well-placed and highly visible. Functionally, the site is built on the joomla content management system and includes a blog. We expect that this site will perform very well.

Law Firm SEO In Song

Published on 28 January 2010 by AttorneySync in News

song Law Firm SEO In SongMost law firms we talk to are starting to get a very basic understanding of SEO strategies. However, they still aren’t sure about which ones actually work and which ones don’t.

The internet is bursting at the seams with search engine optimization information and too much of it is completely contradictory. Lawyers who try to do their own SEO are often unaware of which tasks should take precedence, which have some value, and which are a complete waste of time.
While forums, blogs and articles have large amounts of information, they typically don’t provide “best practice” or “industry standard” info. Instead, they offer a lot of editorial, vague opinions, and snake oil.

Lawyers that decide to retain SEO consultants have the advantage of not having to make their own strategy decisions, but more importantly, they don’t have to spend the time implementing the often time-consuming SEO work.

As with any professional relationship, the relationship between a law firm and its search engine consultant must be based on mutual trust. While the law firm needs to be fully aware of the tactics, progress, and results being made by their SEO consultant, they also need to trust that the SEO knows what is needed for them to succeed and isn’t doing anything that will hurt the firm’s website and/or reputation.

In order for that trust to be established, here are a few things that law firms need to consider:

1) A Change Will Do You Good
While I’m not a huge Sheryl Crow fan myself, when it comes to SEO, she definitely has one thing right, “A change will do you (and your website) good”. If you are unwilling to have changes made, then you simply can’t have your site optimized. While link building, social media, paid-search, etc, are all key components to getting found online, if you want your law firm’s site to perform for your targeted keywords, you have to be willing to make keyword and structural edits to the site itself.
Change is good. Keep in mind that the goal here is not to just improve your search engine rankings, but help you increase your business. Too many law firms (and their SEOs) lose sight of this point.

2) Rollercoaster, Of Rankings
In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes, and your search engine rankings changing.
The internet is a dynamic, constantly evolving, place. New sites are going up, old sites are coming down. New information is added to the web every second. Couple that with the fact that search engine algorithms are in a constant state of flux and you’ve got a roller coaster of rankings.
While I’m certainly not advising that you ignore rankings completely, don’t get addicted to rank crack.

3) Beauty Is Only Skin Deep
A lot of law firm sites, especially older ones, are built by designers that don’t know much about SEO. These sites “look pretty” but don’t do so hot in search engines because of bad structure and missing components.
In extreme cases, you might have to be willing to abandon a site altogether. Other times the site may be salvageable with several structural and architectural changes.
Not making these changes can cripple your web marketing. Don’t be afraid to make the big changes needed to take advantage the benefits SEO can have for your firm.

4) The Magic Carpet Ride
Unfortunately, many unscrupulous law firm SEO specialists sell magic claiming to be able to get your firm to the top of the search engine rankings in a very short time.
As a result, many lawyers want immediate results and don’t trust search consultants in general. They want to spend very little money and they have very high expectations.

The truth is that SEO is not magic at all. There are very concrete, tried-and-true methods that will drive more clients to your website. But these methods take time and effort.

Many law firms are afraid to invest what it takes for success. These firms have entered a vicious cycle of search failure. Their sites under perform and cost more to market than they generate in new business. They of course then claim that, “web marketing doesn’t work.”

Making decisions out of fear leads to making poor decisions. These decisions are often based on a feeling at the moment instead of facts, data, and empirical evidence.
Running your law firm puts enough work on your plate alone. Make informed choices with regard to SEO but don’t act out of fear or desperation.

Practice Specific Sites

Published on 22 January 2010 by AttorneySync in News

If you’re law firm SEO efforts have managed to get your firm’s site to the top of the search engine results for the key phrases you’ve targeted, congratulations.

But don’t get fat and happy, this is just the beginning.

Once you have your firm’s main site ranked, you should consider implementing a practice-area specific microsite.

This strategy involves creating additional sites specific to the different areas of law in which you practice.

When properly implemented, you can spread your reach and increase your real estate in the top search engine results.

The practice-specific sites you create may be very different from your main site and very different from each other. In fact, if the content is even similar, Google, Yahoo and Bing will discount the value of the these practice-specific sites as duplicates.

These practice-specific sites need to be able demonstrate value on their own. For example, if your main site just covers some basics on personal injury law, your personal injury law micro-site should delve much deeper into the subject. In general, when using this law firm seo technique, you need to make sure that you are thinking about the same conversion aspects as you would on your main site (i.e. contact form, whitepapers, and calls to action).

In this way, you can increase your exposure to potential clients because you’ve now got multiple sites working for you, not just one. Think of it as having multiple advertisements (although, having good rankings and multiple sites is far better).

You might ask yourself, Why don’t I just add new content to my main site? Does Google frown upon this? What are the costs involved? Should I link from my main site to the micro-site? Is it better to have a blog or a micro-site?

Great victory in law firm web advertising. Five Connecticut lawyers who got leads on potential clients from a website, have won dismissal of ethics complaints against them.

While the short summary decision doesn’t provide the full reasoning, a full-length decision is due in two weeks.

Congratulations to Total Attorneys!

Google And Free Speech

Published on 13 January 2010 by Gyi Tsakalakis in Blog, News

As a result of recent cyber-attacks, including attacks targeted at free speech advocates in China, Google has decided to change its approach to doing business in China:

“These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered–combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web–have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China. We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China.”

The effects of this policy change will undoubtedly have huge implications both in China and elsewhere.  While I’m still not convinced that Google fully adheres to its “don’t be evil” mantra, this is certainly a step in the right direction.

Privacy On The Web

Published on 12 January 2010 by Gyi Tsakalakis in Blog, News

Why Would I Want To Put Any Information On The Internet At All?

According to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg:

“People have really gotten comfortable not only sharing more information and different kinds, but more openly and with more people. That social norm is just something that has evolved over time.”

However, often times, it’s not a person’s willingness to share information, but rather, their failure to understand the nature, extent, and consequences of sharing their personal information online.

Sharing of personal information online has undergone a rapid evolution.  Most people don’t even realize how accessible they through online channels.  For example, did you know that Google has a record of every search you have ever performed?

The availability of online personal information is also playing a role in our legal system. From plaintiffs, to defendants, to jurors, online personal information and photos are impacting the outcomes of cases.

While I embrace social media, web technology, and obviously, search engines, I believe that the average internet user and social media consumer is greatly under-informed about how much of their personal information is available online.

It will be very interesting to see how the implications of online privacy, or the lack thereof, play out.  One thing is for sure, this is not as open and shut as Mr. Zuckerberg might believe, or prefer.
